About

F'ujoshi, known to most simply as Ujo, spent most of her seven and twenty years studying the Allagan Empire and its technology. Born in La Noscea, she spent her childhood burning through books on her interest, which bordered on obsession. Once she had turned ten, she was sent to study in Sharlayan, working toward fulfilling her dream of being a renowned scholar. When she was of age, she was admitted to the Studium, and worked fervently to make up for her awkward demeanor which kept others at a distance.Ujo's knack for field work, her loaded vocabulary, her sense of propriety, and her blunt manner of speaking pushed her career in another direction. Whether she liked it or not, she had the makings of a political envoy. While she was inducted into the Sons of Saint Coinach, research grants on Allagan technology became sparser, leading the Miqo'te to begrudgingly move back to La Noscea to pursue her new line of work for consistent pay. Now a diplomat for her homeland, she set out to expand the Eorzean Alliance with her peers with a focus on infrastructure, effectively pitching and developing new means of transportation and trade.

When she wasn't drafting speeches or stuck in meetings, Ujo was tinkering away with her knowledge of Allagan technology, making unusual weaponry to aid her in her travels. The more dangerous the terrain she traversed, the more experimental her work became. From firearms to explosives, she did it all with a passion that burned as brightly as the masterpieces she detonated-- a stark contrast to her stoic and demure nature.
After several years of behind-the-scenes grunt work, she was assigned as the head diplomat for Ishgard, and she quickly became enamored by the Coerthan city-state, despite its many problems. Ujo had also developed a reputation amongst fellow engineers as someone perhaps too unconventional for academia, which caught the eye of the Machinist's Guild. She was met with endless correspondence from the Skysteel Manufactory, pestering her to visit and discuss schematics and methodology. After months of shying away, she caved, and her life changed forever.

As the Miqo'te Machinist became more involved with Ishgardian culture, she fixated on firearms to have an excuse to be in Coerthas outside of diplomatic reasons. She found herself thrilled with field testing, marrying her years of research and scholarly pursuits with something tangible. Running through abandoned fortresses and camps, dealing with hordes of monsters and horrors, blasting holes in them with something birthed from her knowledge... It was exhilarating, though it often put her in danger, particularly as she is inept at managing and wielding her aether, much less any sort of magicks.
She relied on sellswords as her main form of companionship and protection to make up for her weaknesses, meeting her bodyguard-turned-closest friend Yhuree through an old connection from Sharlayan. It is because of her friendship with the Xaela woman that she began to learn the way of the gunbreaker, though she is still too frail and uncertain to be a disciplined, proper lady of the blade.Perhaps to some, the idea of the terse, standoffish diplomat who valued candor and decorum above all else wielding horrific amalgams of firearms and ancient technology was a contradiction. But to Ujo, it was simple. Bullets shoot straight. Fire burns hot. Through such simple truths, she found her greatest comforts. It was reassurance for someone who was, in fact, rather insecure in every other facet of her life. She still serves Limsa Lominsa as its primary envoy for Ishgardian affairs and now permanently resides in the city that stole her heart. The many troubles the city still has are a sore spot for her, and one of the many reasons for her burnout work ethic. While she still tinkers around in the Skysteel Manufactory and is often between Sharlayan and Ishgard to lend her engineering expertise, Ujo is also occasionally called upon as an Archon of Allagan technology and infrastructure, typically representing the Sons of Saint Coinach. She tries to keep this hidden, though. It is not enough. There is still much to do, including developing her sense of self.

When not running errands and assisting in developing infrastructure in La Noscea, Ujo can be found penning yet another thesis in Old Sharlayan, developing new technology in Labyrinthos, in meetings with the Holy See, or exploring various ruins of ancient civilizations to make sense of their machinery. She frequently hangs around Camp Dragonhead and the Forgotten Knight after her shifts at the Observatorium. She is a sucker for whisky, and desperately needs the warmth of the hearth as someone who grew up accustomed to Vylbrand's more temperate climate.
Her closest companions are her fellow Machinists, as well as those who accompany her on her travels between countries-- diplomats and mercenaries alike. She has also developed quite the crush on Ser Aymeric after years of political dealings with him and his entourage, but is too meek outside of her experiments to speak of something so improper. Her phlegmatic mien does much and more to conceal her many smoldering desires and opinions.

Physical Description:
Unusually tall for a Miqo'te woman, standing at five fulms and seven ilms. A tad waifish and lanky, with a tendency to curl in on herself. Pitch-black hair with a long, fluffy tail of the same color. Always has a fringe to hide her thick eyebrows, no matter the hairstyle. Extraordinarily light gold eyes, framed by round wire glasses. Clad in blue regardless of the occasion, and rarely without the earring of her guardian, Menphina.

Hooks

  • Fellow Sharlayan scholars may recognize her from her many late nights scrawling out drafts, or from her work as a political envoy. "Please, spare me the details of finding me asleep in a puddle of ink. 'Twas humiliating to deliver my thesis in such a state."

  • Ishgardians may also recognize her for her diplomatic work, her experiments with the Machinist's Guild, or her affiliation with the Observatorium as its chief engineer.

  • Rumors are swirling about regarding her behavior around the Lord Commander. "Why-- I-- That is entirely inappropriate! A man of his station would never stoop to such lows!"

  • While she is typically withdrawn, any mention of machinery will pique her interest and have her scampering toward the discussion with the subtlety and grace of an Adamantoise.

  • Complaints about the Coerthan climate will have her chiming in. She will certainly be drawn to bemoaning the cold with fellow La Nosceans. "I love Ishgard. Truly, I do. However, I dearly miss the sunny shores of Costa del Sol..."

  • She was raised around rogues and scallywags, with her father still working as a sailor and her ex-partner being a high-profile pirate who used her for her proximity to the Limsan upper-class. Buccaneers and bounty hunters alike tend to recognize her for this, and she is extraordinarily avoidant when she sees them near.

  • Considering how much research she did on empires of ages past and their technological advancements, it is only natural that she would have also studied Garlemald and Magitek. While she would never dare speak of this in public, she finds the empire and its technology fascinating. As a child, she found Solus zos Galvus rather dashing, and still collects clockwork dolls of the man. "I cannot in good faith disparage Garlemald and its scientific achievements. Any engineer with sense would admire it thusly."

  • While only a handful of people know this, Ujo was recently made an Archon. Her thesis on Allagan tech and its many uses, as well as her extraordinarily thorough documentation of Azys Lla and other Allagan ruins, earned her the title and mark. She keeps it hidden behind high collars and rarely speaks of her own achievements.

OOC

OOC, please refer to me as Jolyne! Fluent in English & Spanish, learning French. US EST and occasionally EU CET on Marilith.I know Ujo is stuck with a joke name, but it has grown on me, for better or worse. At least it's canon compliant enough to get away with when played straight, and is funny to have in casual OOC settings. Do know I take her very seriously as a character, though. As of now, I main MCH and GNB, and have become rather fond of PVP content. If you see me doing dailies, I am likely leveling my DPS jobs or am learning to heal. I am a professional writer who has been roleplaying for many years on different platforms, but am new to RP on FFXIV (and FFXIV in general!). I have loved Final Fantasy for most of my life, with my favorite game of all time being FFXV. Writing is my main passion, but I also enjoy watching anime & tokusatsu, reading, drawing, and hiking. When I'm not on FFXIV, I can be found DJing various basement shows or snobbishly sipping on wine. All RP is okay with me! Please note that romance will only happen if it suits our characters and storyline. But whatever happens happens, especially if we discuss it beforehand. I prefer literate roleplay with at least a paragraph-length response. RP on Discord, Tumblr, and FFXIV are all okay with me. IC is not OOC. Just because I like potential pairings for characters does not mean I am looking for a similar dynamic OOC-- I am in a relationship. If you're weird or rude, I will block & blacklist you. Please, do not spoil anything beyond Shadowbringers for me! I am currently playing through the Endwalker patch quests.
